lovely things afoot---x. called friday to convey the news of paul mccartney and woody harrelson's descent upon us . . . and then in the age of instant information, the question arose . . . how to convey safety and respect and simultaneously flip with joy????
should we twitter it immediately? or wait???
i thought of how devoted both are to publicity for a good cause . . . mccartney's work for the environment and diet and animals. . . harrelson's exciting documentary "go further" IMDB. . .
and then jean louis recalls the oxygen bar in west hollywoood . . .
Jean-Louis, renowned from Louis XIV ( say quatorze), has such an array of gorgeous francophone and international friends who continually delight with their lovely manners.
kirby said Jean-Louis has such a graceful way about him---a timeless old world charm---it is infectious---and no wonder he has so many friends!!!!! it seems he was lucky to assist paul in obtaining some potassium rich coconut juice . . .
and really in los angeles, celebrity becomes a daily affair . . . i instantly thought of stella mccartney and her commitment to fur-free, leather-free couture . . . and the fair-trade diamond she wears---certified not-a-blood-diamond.
what is essential too, is remembering that the focus is outward now---we aren't speaking so much of low-carb diets, but of low-carbon diets and how our lifestyle choices impact the planet. How can we eat in a way showing reverence for the earth, and the people on it, beset with the crises of water shortages, desertification, epidemic, trans-mutational hybrid diseases, and all the silent killers, like anxiety and depression.
it was a pleasure yesterday morning to spend a long time with a young fellow discussing nutritional recommendations for optimum well-being. He walked away with magnesium, a comprehensive herbal liver cleanser, a list of nutritional recommendations, and Annie Jubb's lifefood recipe book which you can get here at the store or at north atlantic books.
it's hard to contain the joy and excitement about such luminaries visting the store. But i am chronically thinking of one of my favorite songs "heartland feeling" from the beck album, golden feelings. The refrain, he/she "is only a person, who doesn't know ****, nothing happening, that's about it." beck on people.
which is all so complicated, yes we are only people, even sir paul is only a person. but what is so magical is that time and age and life and history have led us up to these moments, where we might choose to do something beautiful for the planet, and all humans. and choose to be inspired, invigorated. choose to have heroes.
or not.
and so really, i think paul and woody won't mind us flipping out a little, because they have been such passionate activists for the earth, our health, and animals. I think they know full well the magic of their golden touch---to inspire and invigorate our neighborhood, and a commitment to organics and ecological living.
we are honored, obviously.
but what would be even more profound is if we all might find ways to love the earth, fight for the poor, treat our bodies as magical sacred things, and have compassion for others and ourselves.
to be inspired, and to find music as a way to heal the world . . .
***
it was lovely chatting with a yoga teacher who dropped by. he loved the chili and gave me advice about how to stand . . . and i felt lifted up . . . and we discussed crafting an ecotopia . . .and visions for greening the entire neighborhood . . . affordable yoga . . . feng shui . . .

her company the good life raw food

mucho thanks to space fifteen twenty for the support!!!!!
anh do, marketing manager from urban outfitters at space 15twenty dropped off her info . . .
i think we have a pact!!!! a brilliant alliance!!!!
i didn't know it would happen so fast!!!!!
very excited about flea market sunday and the fundraising for haiti!!!!!
bring clothing donations and dollar bills---and then cross the street to check us out!

so happy to realize that we will have cordon bleu culinary school students as customers as well . . . it is a pleasure to speak with real foodies and to have their support!!!!!
http://www.cordonbleu.edu/ located across the street at the arclight complex.
a fun trend to think of is the way entertainment industries interact with the possibility of a more responsible way of interacting with the earth.
we are so lucky to have a position of influence.
a platform from which to articulate the possibility of health and respect for the earth.
to be in los angeles has a certain catastrophic quality to it taking into account the decades of infrastructure snafus, the lack of city-wide recycling, the un-bike-friendliness, the car culture, the smog . . .
but
we have so many beautiful spots around town. cru, euphoria, leaf . . .
and we also have prop 65 and the awareness of consumer safety issues
like acrylamide in cooked foods---which california attorney general fought for labeling for all fried potato products---and a new formula for lays and kettle chips---and at what point this is corporate defamation or consumer safety at play???

or heterocyclic amines with mutagenic properties . . .

but what we do have is exciting!!!! here at lifefood, we aren't just delighting the palate with kind ecological foods. i knew from the moment i heard about the earliest stages of conceptualization that this kind of operation is more about a philosophy of respect towards the earth and ecosystem.
before i knew her, i found annie jubb on the youtube video with daryl hannah. they were making brazil nut milk. daryl was a hero to me after reading about her work with the community garden in southcentral. and then there was her streak for peace!!!!
when i first met xavier, he was telling me about a film about the bees.
vanishing of the bees
and then i saw the sculpture in his studio using recycled woven plastic bags---illustrating plasticity and the crisis of petrochemical madness.
the eternal nature of plastics . . . and then i was thinking of all the nurdles in the ocean . . . the plastic pellets. the creatures eating them. weird fishes.
and endocrine disruption, pthalate regulation, leeching, the mythologies of the recycling class, the fluctuations of the recycling industries . . .
and then i saw the model for the zero-energy consuming skate park with solar panels . . .
the macarthur park garden revitalization project was underway . . .
and this idea:
a spot in hollywood with legendary Annie Jubb of NYC's Jubb's Longevity seemed a transcendant dream.
laurel brought in some rad music and we're rocking out to the yeahyeahyeahs and to the dead weather today!!!!
i love the new generation of empowering girls!!!! and hey allison mosshart's vegan too maybe . . .
well---i know what the scene is like in Nashville where the jack white studios are resurrecting the old blues . . . . it's deep-fried . . .
now if we get some la roux, MIA, and yelle, and ladyhawke's vegan glory roaring!!!
listening to some radiohead . . .
and kudos to thom yorke, vegan and eco-activist who had a great hurrah up there at the COP 15 copenhagen climate conference/fiasco.
thom yorke says no! video from the guardian.co.uk
hey, what is so rad too is becoming connected to the neighborhood.
for instance my pal andy clockwise has a show at hotel cafe tonight a block away.
and i just saw trip of the thunder from heaven scene. and the people watching is full of the cutest of daytime hollywood.
i told andy to come by and sample some organics. i've been having fantasies about feeding rockers healthy juices and organic things for a while now.
that is only because i want them to have bowie-esque immortality and perfect skin---
and what about the greening of music festivals????
i was so happy to see lollapalooza's amazing commitment to a more ecological response, education and interactive recycling incentives, refillable water bottles . . .
note to self run some menus over to the the ivar library---i heard the librarians are starving
so to explain the basics:
its vegan
organic
mostly raw
with the exceptions of a local raw goat cheese
or bee pollen and honey in a few things!!!!
so all you hungry vegans out there, ask questions!
we are delighted to make it your world!!!!!
and thanks to kristina rohr for her dedication to ecological journalism
http://naturalla.com/
and hey is anybody else noticing the disparity between the guardian's environmental/ethical coverage compared to american press????
we have some good things happening here but the knowledge base has to transform---and transcend the fake science and corporate brainwashing.

falling in love with the neighborhood
today getting nickles and dimes at wells fargo was fun! i was chatting with the extra eco-banker guy who later rode over on his skateboard for a super sandwich!!!!
can we fix the banking situation with hemp seed pumpkin seed sprouted bread??? and homemade raw cashew raw-genaise (can i say that???) maybe . . .
where else but hollywood do bankers ride skateboards?!!!!! awesome!!!! saw tania enriquez near amoeba and feel excited about plans to confabulate regarding parties and promotions with space15twenty. the groundwork crowd are paying loyal visits and tasting seaweed salad, the corn tamale and have unbeatable enthusiasm for the genre. . . oh and this cool guy from playfood was wearing a "vegans taste like chicken" t-shirt which might as well have said "vegans can have a morbid dry wit" but i was able to contain mine, for the sake of professionalism. a band called 30 seconds to mars came in and i overheard talk about a big tour. and we seem to have some audio-visual geniuses in the neighborhood who are doing work for a serious music producer, think like, the most famous one you can think of . . .
and the cool guys from new italian restaurant vinolio (up the street next door to the beauty bar) have dropped by to show off their french and try super smoothies and lemon poppyseed cake.
can i mention how moist the raw vegan wheat-free almond "cake" part is???? it really gives a nice sense of the vegan raw cake . . .
checked out the facebook situation and twittered up a link to the campaign for safe cosmetics
http://www.safecosmetics.org/
since this whole issue with cosmetics---cadmium in toys and general toxicity has been on my mind lately . . .
i'm really happy about our super MSM sunscreen with no nano-particles or parabens or any of that contradictory stuff . . .
it literally looks like the best stuff i've seen on the market---and yes i can read labels for hours and haggle and haggle . . .
i think the key thing to remember is transdermal absorption!!!
anything you put on your body will be absorbed . . . and that is why for moisturizing---coconut, or olive---or i hear macadamia nut are so sought . . . and the blessed avocado.
so hold on tight we are working on a web site . . .
it will come
valentina was hard at work on the menu---thanks to everyone who has dropped by to try things out . . .
and in other news we are brainstorming some ideas for cleansing and guided programs that will help you feel amazing. i have a lot of ideas . . .
most significant being
aloe, flax, and green juices---
with spirulina and herbal support . . .
lately i love orange juice and carrot too . . . and juicing seems to be the way to have healthier skin . . .
and one last note . . .
http://www.foodnotbombs.net/
i am so happy that we as a business will be able to support the spirit of food not bombs, a phenomenon that i first learned of in 1998.
food not bombs erupts in non-heirarchical spontaneous formations, in the spirit of non-violence and sensitivity to hunger. i've been dreaming of a foodnotbombs hollywood division--and with the generous donations of vegetables from the farmers at the sunday ivar market, i know food not bombs has thrived on the east side, successfully cooking thousands of vegetarian meals for the poor of downtown LA.
even if what we have to offer is small---any good we can do for the neighborhood is all about sparking a revolution of spirit. and that moment of love when a beloved elder, a hero of the deceased blog profiles in poverty, has something to eat for a moment . . .
well you get the idea.
oh and for some reason i am dreaming of my friend rick rasura from prism eye, soul or system, and the old polyphonic spree and wonder if he wants to bring his huge harp in to play????
something about the fountain and plants and peaceful vibe just says harp to me . . . oh what a dream of a party that would be!!!!
http://www.myspace.com/prismeye
just to let you in on a little secret---i have been dreaming of this corner for years---it has a very gravitational pull for me . . . delightful things have happened---like meeting franz ferdinand at 15twenty or seeing dissolver the night before depeche mode went on at vine . . . or well, amoeba is a wonderland of pre-mp3 times . . .
and the CNN building still houses fundraising offices---for the children's hospital it seems . . .
and i miss the days of environmental fundraising 101 when the only thing vegan to eat was a lara bar from groundwork (which my piddling salary could barely afford might i note.) those were the days, but now we have raw vegan cakes galore . . . pesto kelp noodles . . . the most amazing buckwheaties raw granola . . .
oh and so much love to golden bridge for the grandeur and for being a great place to eat when we were unpacking . . .
http://www.goldenbridgeyoga.com/
thank you for your support!!!!
and hennessey and ingalls, long live books and gorgeous art books, though controversially, i love the google books too. . . and see immense benefits for the blind in the digitization project with audio transfer. . . for global literacy . . . and for my own eyestrain in the font modifications . . .
